Index to 1860 Mortality Schedule of South Carolina

$10.00

The US Federal Census Mortality Schedule records the names of all persons usually living at home who died during the twelve months immediately preceding June 1st of the census year. In 1860, the schedule contains the name of the deceased (and/or his owner), his age, sex, marital status, color, profession and condition. Slaves are easily identified, as the statistics include the civil status of the deceased; however, not every census enumerator listed the owners of the dead slaves. In many cases both the dead slave's name and that of his owner are given. In this index both the owner's name (used here for identification purposes only) and that of the deceased slave are indexed.
