Hardeman County, located in west Tennessee, was created in 1823 from parts of Hardin County and "Indian Lands". It was named for Thomas J. Hardeman, a veteran of the Creek War and the War of 1812. He also fought for the independence of Texas and was a congressman in the Republic of Texas. These "Loose Marriages" were gathered by the W. P. A. Workers in the late 1930's and early 1940's. Included with the bride and groom is the name of the official as well as the date the license was issued and the date of the marriage itself.
