Ripley County, Missouri was officially organized on 5 January 1833 and was named for Brigadier General Eleazar Wheelock Ripley, a soldier in the War of 1812. The historic Natchitoches Trail wandered through Ripley County as a Native American trail and one of the early routes to the southwest used by pioneers like Stephen Austin. During the Civil War, four colonels for the Confederacy came from this county which now is part of the Mark Twain National Forest.
