During the War of 1812, Virginia was a main player in the defense of the United States against the British. There were hundreds of soldiers from the Old Dominion who fought in the various battles in this conflict. Virginia kept good records of those who fought with either Rosters or Pay Rolls. These two listing give a great accounting of the soldiers and their service. Normally both list were kept for each commander from a particular area of the state. Since West Virginia was not formed at this time, these records were given here by the regions of service. Either the Roster or the Pay Roll indicates the county from whence these soldiers originated.
