Barbour County, [West] Virginia Birth Records, 1854-1859

$22.00

Barbour County, located in the upper mid-central portion of the state was created in 1843 out of the lands of Lewis, Harrison and Randolph counties. When the state of Virginia required each county to collect birth and death records in 1853, Barbour complied. They established a record for each of these two records in the two different districts within the county at the time, i.e. the eastern and western districts. Since these were Virginia State Records, the originals were kept in that state and when West Virginia was created, clerks had to copy these records to be housed in Charleston. Our copy was from the Virginia State Archives. The copy held in Charleston is mostly the same, but there are many subtle differences. You need to study each carefully. The original has the Clerk's certification attached which the copy would not include. These records for Barbour County contains over 6800 names.
