The 1890 census for 99% of the United States was destroyed by fire in the early part of the last century. Whenever possible, the 1890 tax records are substituted for the head of the households, at least. These records for the four districts of Bland County tell an interesting story of those who lived there at the time. The number of white male inhabitants 21 years of age or older in the household are given, then their livestock is counted along with their vehicles and more than 40 different types of articles. All of these items are taxed in some fashion. This volume makes a great historical piece as well as for genealogical purposes.
