The 1840 Giles County, Virginia census gives the name of the head of the household. All of the residents are shown with the sex/age groupings. A separate listing of the freed colored are given by sex/age groups as well. There is a listing from the second page of the census giving the occupations of the family, those who were blind/deaf, etc and finally, a listing of those who were pensioners from the American Revolution or the War of 1812 by name and age. The last item given is the type of school listed under the teacher with the number of scholars in that school.
