The 1870 census of the United States gives much information. Recorded here are the household numbers, the names of those living in each house, ages, race, occupation and place of birth of each of these. The comparison of the 1860 and the 1870 census of any county will give a clue as to how many were lost during the Civil War and this is also the first record of many of those who were formerly just listed as "slaves". Now there is a name and information connected to them.
