Rockbridge County, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, is a very important county during the Civil War and this is a record of those living there prior to that time. Slaves were not given by name in this records, but were later found in the 1870 census. This is the first of all of the United States Census to give the names of all those living within a household. This alone makes this census of great value to the researcher. Included in the records are the name, age, sex and race as well as the occupation and property/real estate values and place of birth of the individuals.
