The first settlement in the Pejepscot area was made by Thomas Purchase about 1628. However, the area was the subject of several conflicting grants, and little permanent settlement took place until the Pejepscot Company was formed in 1714. The towns of Brunswick and Topsham, Maine were constituted townships by the General Court in 1717, but were not incorporated until much later. Harpswell was originally part of North Yarmouth, had been appended to Brunswick for a short time, and was finally incorporated as a separate town in 1758. This huge history covers the entire area developed by the Pejepscot Proprietors from the time of the aboriginal inhabitants down to the late nineteenth century. All the usual historical topics are covered, including such fascinating items as criminals and the courts, taverns and public halls, modes of travel and means of communication, schools, churches, forts and garrison, and commercial, municipal, and military history of the towns. In addition, there are about three hundred pages devoted to biographies, family histories, and various civil and military lists. There are numerous illustrations and maps as well. This new edition includes a new every-name index compiled by Shirley Simington Schilly, and provided by the Pejepscot Historical Society.
