County court order books contain records of all matters brought before the court while in session.
The information contained in these records may not appear elsewhere. The order books typically provide a synopsis of court cases in a relatively organized format. Records you may find include appointments of local officials, records of legal disputes such as property disputes, estate disputes, and disputes involving slaves and servants, certificates granted for apprehending runaway servants and delivering letters, and much more. This information is similar to our present day small claims and civil courts. This volume contains entries from Middlesex County, Virginia Order Book No. 3, 1694-1705 beginning on page 170 and ending on page 336 for courts held March 1, 1696/7 through April 1, 1700. An index to full-names, places and subjects adds to the value of this work.
