In Lorraine Quillon's most recently published deed abstract book for Belmont County, Ohio, a new set of indexes revealed an interesting detail, which prompted her to tabulate the other counties mentioned in those records. Washington County, Pennsylvania, was definitely well represented and seemed to warrant publication of its own book.
The main purpose of this work is to serve as an index to the original records: Volume 1 (1781-1803) and Volume 2 (1803-1814). While preparing this volume, an effort was made to connect the wills to individuals in the FamilySearch database (https://www.familysearch.org). The major portion of this research was done in mid-2021, so the IDs were in use as of that time. However, subsequent merges may make locating the target individuals a little more challenging. The included every-name index and brief index to Persons Presumed to Be of Color and/or Enslaved will hopefully make it easier to access names of interest.
Please be sure to refer to the documents themselves for many details of legacies that were not able to be included in the abstracts. To make that easier, the frame-numbers of the microfilm copy have been added to the abstracts. After accessing the film, simply enter the frame-number in the "Image __ of ###" to go directly to the proper page.
Some abstracts herein are supplemented with annotations by the compiler, whose research sometimes led her to explore other sources for the families she encountered as these abstracts were created. Figuring that those forays might be useful for other researchers in Washington County, she added them to the manuscript. They are obviously not part of the official record. Readers should treat them as extraneous material and determine their relevancy.
