Barren County, Kentucky, was created in 1799 from portions of Green and Warren counties. It included parts of what are today’s Allen, Hart, Metcalfe, and Monroe. A site of Virginia military bounty land, Barren’s hills quickly attracted new settlers. The 1810-1840 censuses transcribed here are the earliest available for this county. The following transcriptions were made from the microfilm records stored in the National Archives. Effort was made to accurately decode the handwriting and preserve the original spelling. Each census lists the names of the head of the household followed by statistical data showing the age categories of the various household members. The statistical data for the 1810 census consists of five columns on the left for males and five columns on the right for females. These are followed by a column for free colored and another for slaves. Although slaves were shown by age groupings in the later censuses, they are not shown by name and have been listed fin these columns simply as a total number. The statistical data for the 1830 and 1840 censuses follow similar pattern but with more subdivisions.
