The author took a first-hand approach to compiling this list of 108 family, church, and public cemeteries in Cumberland County, Maine, and the people buried therein; over countless weekends for two and a half years, she traveled all over the county in search of the forgotten gravestones. Sometimes she could not locate a long-abandoned cemetery, and sometimes the inscriptions were impossible to read, but she supplemented these gaps with information from turn-of-the-century newspaper articles, obituaries, and town histories. Some of the very old cemeteries listed in this book, through negligence and vandalism, are in danger of being lost to the public, but Mrs. Ketover's labors insure that these important markers of the past will remain a valuable genealogical resource. Neatly organized by cemetery name, each list notes whether or not the cemetery could be found and the method of compilation used, whether stone by stone transcription or written record. In addition to transcribing names and dates from the stones, the author has included, when available, names of relatives of the deceased, inscriptions from memorial markers, cemetery histories, and notes about the condition of the cemetery or particular stones. A few maps, a listing of cemetery names arranged by town, and a surname index make the reader's search for particular information easier.
