Beginning in 1861, the Federal government needed to plan a prison for the Confederate Officers captured during the Civil War. Johnson's Island in Sandusky Bay was selected as the site. This island was some three miles off shore and thought to be very secure for the prison. However, these were not the usual "plow-boys" off the farms, but rather the intelligentsia of the south. Their whole aim was to escape and many did. We have included in this little volume their personal accounts of some of the daring escapes mostly over the ice in the winter when the lake would freeze solid as only Lake Erie can do in sub-zero weather. Also included is a listing of those held captive here with their rank, regiment, residence and where and when captured.
