The name of Fergus, Ferguson or Fergusson, traces its ancient roots to King Fergus, who arrived on Scotland's shore in 498 AD. His descendant, John Ferguson (1736-1820), came to America, c1767. "John Ferguson, the son of Peter and Isabel Ferguson of Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland, who emigrated to America and settled in Newport, Rhode Island, was the progenitor of a large family and the only one of his father's family... to perpetuate his name. The following genealogy contains a record of his descendants down to the present time [1911]." This book opens with a brief history of the name, followed by an account of Peter Ferguson, the father of John Ferguson. Records cover ninety-four male and female descendants. Entries include (as available): date and place of birth, date of marriage and name of spouse, date and place of death, varying biographical information, and names of children. Genealogical data is provided (as available) for spouse and children. Biographical sketches have been included for several descendants. Finally, a Discourse delivered at the funeral of Rev. John Ferguson (1858) offers a detailed account of his life. Numerous portraits and illustrations, the original full-name index, and a brief genealogy of the Eddy family supplement this work.
