The name of Fergus, Ferguson or Fergusson, traces its ancient roots to King Fergus, who arrived on Scotland's shore in 498 AD. His descendant, John Ferguson (1736-1820), came to America, c1767. "John Ferguson, the son of Peter and Isabel Ferguson of Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland, who emigrated to America and settled in Newport, Rhode Island, was the progenitor of a large family and the only one of his father's family... to perpetuate his name.
