Part 1, History of the Northwest Territory, and Part 2, History of the State of Ohio, have been omitted from this edition of the book. The text begins on page 213 with Part 3, History of Madison County. Part 3 begins with the archeology of the Mound Builders, followed by a sketch of the Indian tribes and their relations to Madison County. From there the record begins with the trials, hardships, manners and customs of the early pioneers and continues with the early surveys, civil organization, topographical and geological outline of the county. Part 4 outlines the histories of each township, the churches, schools, societies, and manufacturing interests. Townships include Darby, Jefferson, Deer Creek, Union, Pleasant, Stokes, Range, Pike, Monroe Canaan, Fairfield, Somerford, Paint and Oak Run. Part 5 consists of biographical sketches for each township. Portraits of prominent citizens are placed throughout the text.
