The first half of the book focuses on Maine history before 1700, beginning with Leif Erickson's exploration circa 1000 A.D., and continuing with descriptions of early settlement and interaction with the Indians. The second half of the book describes the wars and further settlement of the area, and culminates in the prosperous years of the late 19th century.
